Achilles South Florida and the Outpatient Clinic at Orlando Health are planning a handcycle clinic on March 3, 2012. Save the date. Come out and try a adaptive activity that allows you to propel yourself.

We are looked for a lake with enough water (hope for rain) so that we can fish from an accessible dock. None could be found, so we are postponing the fishing event until the fall. You can still give us your contact information so we can let you know in the fall.

The character Leo McGarry on the show The West Wing tells a story to a subordinate/mentee in the second season episode, "Noël":

This guy's walkin' down a street when he falls in a hole. The walls are so steep he can't get out. A doctor passes by and the guy shouts up, "Hey you! Can you help me out?" The doctor writes a prescription, throws it down in the hole, and moves on. Then a priest comes along and the guy shouts up, "Father, I'm down in this hole; can you help me out?" The priest writes out a prayer, throws it down in the hole and moves on. Then a friend walks by. "Hey, Joe, it's me. Can ya help me out?" And the friend jumps in the hole. Our guy says, "Are ya stupid? Now we're both down here." The friend says, "Yeah, but I've been down here before and I know the way out."

Before I get a lot of angry emails and calls from doctors and clergy, they both are groups of wonderful caring people who do great things and help in so many ways in their own manner. We still need other things they can't give us. They are still on the outside looking in and don't personally know all the feelings we have.

We all fell in the "hole" when we recieved our injury. We have learned things ourselves or from others that we can pass along to those who haven't learned the same things. Even if you feel that you are only learning from others, there will be a newer injury you can teach when your time comes. This learning can happen in a support group, at a social event like a picnic or a party, and at lectures with speakers.

Not everything has to be about learning. The Greater Orlando Spinal Cord Injury Network is a group where you can just be yourself. You aren't going to stick out or be different. Sure your situation is unique. On the other hand, please believe we all have had all the feelings and struggles you have had. So why not laugh, fellowship, share, support, ask, and answer with people who are closer to understanding you then almost any other person on the planet?

UCF Hand Control Study

The UCF Aging and Technology Lab is currently performing a study assessing the usability of portable hand control devices on a driving simulator. We are looking for individuals with disabilities to participate in the study. Anyone who participates will be compensated $20 for their time, the experiment will take between 60 and 90 minutes.

Participation criteria:

Current and valid drivers' license, wheelchair users
Drives own car with hand controls or other experience driving with hand controls and steering knobs
Ability to use thumbs while driving (good thumb dexterity)
At least 4 lbs of grip in hands
Eyesight must be 20/40 or better (bring glasses or contacts if you wear them).

The planning for 2012 has begun. Tentative dates are already on the calendar. Check it out. We want to do things for which you would join us. Would you do SCUBA? A theme park? Sky Diving? Indoor Sky Diving?

Every month on the First and Third Tuesday the Lucerne (Orlando Health) Spinal Cord Injury Support Group meets at the Lucerne Pavilion at 2:30 PM. All are welcome.

Want some physical activity? Try Quad Rugby. Practice is every Sunday afternoon, in the Barnett Park Gymnasium (they must not have a Pavilion), 4801 W. Colonial Drive, Orlando, FL 32808 starting at 3:00 PM.

Disability Wellness Spinal Cord Injury Support Group

The Disability Wellness Spinal Cord Injury Support Group meets on the second Saturday of the month from 3-6 pm. Friends, family members and care givers are not only welcome to attend, but are very strongly encouraged to join in (they need support too). Please have everyone contact the center by phone (407) 422-WELL (9355) or by email ( info@disabilitywellnesscenter.org ) including how many are coming. Food and drinks are being provided for everyone, so please let them know how many will be there.
